How Are Bulk Bags of Logs Delivered?
You've found the firewood you want, chosen the right quantity and you're ready to order.
Then you look outside.
How is a huge bag of logs actually going to be delivered to your house?
Will the driver bring it up your driveway?
Can it go over gravel?
Will the logs be put in your garage?
What if you've got a narrow road?
And can the driver take the bag around the back to your log store?
These are questions worth answering before you order a large firewood delivery.
At Armstrong Country Store, we deliver kiln dried firewood to eligible locations throughout the UK, but large firewood orders are very different from an ordinary parcel delivery.
Here's what you should know.
How Does Home Delivery of Firewood Work?
The exact delivery method depends on the type and quantity of firewood you've ordered.
Large orders may be transported on a pallet, with delivery made using a suitable delivery vehicle.
That means you need to think about more than whether a van can get to your postcode.
The road, property access and unloading area all matter.
Before ordering, ask yourself:
Where can the delivery vehicle safely stop?
Where can the firewood safely be unloaded?
What is the surface like?
How am I getting the logs from there to my log store?
Sorting that out beforehand can save a lot of hassle on delivery day.
Will My Logs Be Delivered to My Door?
Don't interpret home delivery as a promise that a large bag of firewood will be carried through your property and placed exactly where you store your logs.
Large firewood deliveries have practical access limitations.
Where the order can be left depends on the delivery method, vehicle access and conditions at your property.
That's why we strongly recommend reading our delivery information before ordering, particularly if access to your property is unusual.
You can check the full Armstrong Country Store Delivery Terms & Conditions before placing your order.
Can a Pallet of Logs Be Moved Over Gravel?
This is a big one.
If your firewood is being unloaded using a manual pallet truck, loose gravel can prevent the pallet from being moved where you expect.
Pallet trucks have small, hard wheels. They're designed for suitable firm, level surfaces – not for travelling across loose gravel, grass or rough ground.
Current UK pallet-delivery guidance from firewood suppliers specifically warns customers about surfaces such as gravel, grass, slopes and uneven ground.
So if you've got a gravel driveway, don't assume:
“The lorry can get onto the drive, so the logs can go wherever I want.”
Those are two different things.
Check the delivery requirements before ordering.
What About Grass?
Grass can present the same problem.
A heavy pallet and a manual pallet truck aren't something you should expect a driver to wheel across your lawn.
Even if the ground looks firm, conditions can change considerably after rain.
If your ideal unloading position involves crossing grass, check what's actually possible before delivery day.
Can Firewood Be Delivered Up a Slope?
Slopes can also restrict pallet movement.
Remember how heavy a large firewood delivery is.
A pallet truck isn't a powered off-road vehicle.
A steeply sloping driveway can therefore affect where an order can safely be unloaded.
If your property has a significant slope or unusual access, check the delivery conditions before placing your order rather than assuming the driver will find a way.
What If There Are Steps?
A pallet truck can't simply be wheeled up a flight of steps.
If access to your preferred storage area involves steps, plan for the delivery to be left at a suitable accessible location and think about how you'll move the firewood from there.
This is where the way your firewood is packaged starts to become important.
Think About Your Log Store Before You Order
Imagine this:
Your firewood can be delivered to the front of your property.
Your log store is behind the house.
Between the two you've got:
a narrow side passage → a gate → a path → the back garden.
If you've ordered one enormous bag of loose firewood, you're going to need to move those logs from A to B.
That's perfectly manageable for many customers.
But it's worth knowing about before you choose your firewood format.
Bulk Bags: Simple When Access Is Good
A large Bulk Bag can be extremely convenient if you've got suitable access and your storage area is reasonably close to the delivery point.
At Armstrong Country Store, our larger loose-firewood options include:
0.7m³ Builders Bag
1m³ Bulk Bag
1.7m³ Super Large Bulk Bag
These give you a substantial supply of kiln dried firewood in one large bag.
If the bag can be delivered somewhere convenient, brilliant.
If your log store is 40 metres away behind the house, you may want to consider another option.
Barrow Bags: Useful for Awkward Access
This is exactly why we offer Barrow Bags.
Instead of having the entire quantity in one large bag, your firewood is divided between several more manageable bags.
Our options include:
4 Barrow Bags – approximately 1.2m³ total
6 Barrow Bags – approximately 1.75m³ total
The individual Barrow Bags can be moved separately by hand or using a suitable trolley.
So if you've got a narrow garden path, side entrance or storage area away from the delivery point, Barrow Bags may be considerably more practical.
Important distinction though:
Choosing Barrow Bags doesn't guarantee the delivery driver will take them to your log store.
Their advantage is that you can move the individual bags more easily after delivery.
Woven Bags Make Handling Even Easier
Another option is individually packed woven bags of kiln dried logs.
At Armstrong Country Store, these contain approximately 8-inch logs and are available in quantities including:
24 woven bags
48 woven bags
72 woven bags
96 woven bags
Instead of moving individual loose logs from a Bulk Bag, you can carry and organise your firewood a bag at a time.
For some properties, that's a significant convenience.
What If I Live on a Narrow Road?
This needs consideration too.
Large firewood orders require a suitable delivery vehicle.
If your property is reached by a particularly narrow lane, restricted road or difficult entrance, don't assume access will be straightforward.
Likewise, think about:
Low branches
Tight corners
Parked vehicles
Restricted turning space
Weight or width restrictions
Gates
Overhead obstructions
If there's something unusual about access to your property, it's much better to deal with it before dispatch than when a delivery vehicle is already outside.
Can the Driver Put My Logs in the Garage?
Don't rely on it.
The driver's ability to position the delivery is restricted by the delivery equipment, access and safety requirements.
Your garage may look like the obvious place to you, but getting a heavy pallet into it may not be possible.
Plan on the basis of the delivery terms, not on the assumption that the driver can put the logs wherever you'd ideally like them.
Can I Ask the Driver to Leave the Logs Around the Back?
Again, don't assume this is possible.
If getting to the back involves:
gravel
grass
steps
a narrow gate
uneven ground
or simply a route unsuitable for the delivery equipment, the driver may not be able to do it.
This is why we keep coming back to the same advice:
Choose your firewood packaging according to your property.
If you know you'll have to move the firewood yourself after delivery, Barrow Bags or woven bags could make your life considerably easier.
What Should I Do Before Delivery Day?
A little preparation goes a long way.
Before your logs arrive:
- Check the delivery information
- Make sure access is clear
- Think about where the delivery can realistically be unloaded
- Move vehicles if they're likely to obstruct access
- Make sure you've got suitable storage ready
- Plan how you'll move the logs from the delivery point
- Don't assume the driver can cross unsuitable surfaces
- Contact us beforehand if there's something unusual about your access
Don't wait until the lorry is outside to discover there's nowhere suitable for the order to go.
What Happens After the Logs Are Delivered?
Get them stored properly.
Our firewood arrives kiln dried and ready to use, so your job is to keep it in good condition.
Store your logs somewhere:
Dry
Covered
Well ventilated
and preferably away from persistently damp ground.
A proper outdoor log store is ideal.
If you've ordered a large Bulk Bag, moving the logs into their long-term storage rather than leaving them exposed to the weather is the sensible option.
Check the Quantity Before Choosing the Delivery Format
Delivery convenience matters, but so does quantity.
If you're only an occasional stove user, you may not need one of the largest options.
If you burn firewood regularly throughout winter, ordering a larger quantity may reduce how frequently you need deliveries.
Our range includes everything from smaller individually packed bags through to substantial bulk quantities.
The question isn't:
“What's the biggest bag?”
It's:
“How much will I use, where will it be delivered and how will I store it?”
Answer those three questions and choosing the right product becomes much easier.
What About the Quality of the Firewood?
Delivery is only half the story.
The product arriving at your house needs to be worth buying in the first place.
Our kiln dried firewood is:
Woodsure Ready to Burn certified
Below 20% moisture content
Produced by the Armstrong family
Locally sourced from FSC® 100% certified, well-managed forests
Kiln dried in purpose-built kilns
Triple screened to remove excess bark and dust
We're not simply arranging delivery of finished firewood bought from somebody else.
We produce the logs ourselves.
From Our Family to Your Home
Our process starts long before the delivery vehicle reaches your street.
We locally source the timber before processing it into firewood.
Timber sourced → Sawn → Split → Kiln dried → Triple screened → Packed → Delivered
That gives us control over the firewood we're sending to customers rather than simply acting as a reseller.
Once it's packed, the final stage is getting it safely to your home.
And that's why understanding the delivery requirements matters.
Frequently Asked Questions About Firewood Delivery
How are Bulk Bags of logs delivered?
Large firewood orders may be delivered palletised using a suitable delivery vehicle. The exact delivery arrangements depend on the product, destination and delivery service.
Can a pallet of logs be delivered onto gravel?
Don't assume so. Manual pallet trucks generally require firm, level surfaces and can have difficulty operating on loose gravel. Check the delivery conditions before ordering.
Can firewood be delivered over grass?
A heavy pallet generally shouldn't be expected to travel over grass using a manual pallet truck. Ground conditions and delivery equipment matter.
Can firewood be delivered up steps?
A pallet truck cannot simply move a heavy pallet up steps. If your property has steps between the road and your preferred delivery point, check the delivery arrangements beforehand.
Will the driver put my logs in my garage?
Don't assume that they can. The order can only be positioned where the delivery equipment and conditions safely allow.
Can the driver take my logs into the back garden?
This depends on access and the delivery arrangements. Don't order on the assumption that the driver will move the firewood through your property to your log store.
What if I have a narrow driveway?
Check the delivery terms before ordering. If access is particularly narrow or restricted, contact us before placing or dispatching a large order.
What if my log store is behind my house?
Consider how you'll move the firewood after delivery. Barrow Bags or woven bags may be more convenient than one large Bulk Bag where the storage point is some distance away.
Do Armstrong Country Store deliver firewood throughout the UK?
We offer home delivery to eligible UK locations. Some locations are excluded or may incur additional charges, so check our Delivery Terms & Conditions before ordering.
Should I be home for my firewood delivery?
Check the delivery arrangements for your particular order. Don't assume a large firewood order can automatically be left unattended.
Before You Order, Walk the Route
There's one very simple thing we'd recommend before ordering a large quantity of firewood.
Walk from the road to your log store.
Look at the route as though you're trying to move a heavy delivery through it.
Gravel?
Steps?
Narrow gate?
Steep driveway?
Long garden path?
Log store around the back?
Those details can determine whether a Bulk Bag, Barrow Bags or individually packed woven bags are the best choice for your home.
The quality of your firewood matters.
The quantity matters.
But so does getting it from our family to your fireside without creating unnecessary work for you.
For property access, delivery exclusions and applicable surcharges, always check Armstrong Country Store's Delivery Terms & Conditions before ordering.
