You've lit the kindling, added a couple of logs and waited for a good fire.
Instead, the flames disappear.
The logs sit there smouldering, blackening or producing smoke without giving you the fire you expected.
So what's going wrong?
The firewood is often blamed immediately, but that's only one possibility.
If your logs won't burn properly, the problem can be anything from excess moisture in the wood to poor airflow, oversized logs, the way the fire was started or an issue with the stove or chimney.
Here are eight things worth checking.
1. Your Firewood May Be Too Wet
This is the obvious place to start.
Freshly cut wood contains a substantial amount of moisture. Before that wood can burn effectively, energy from the fire has to deal with the water contained within it.
That's why moisture content matters when buying firewood.
In England, wood sold in quantities below 2m³ for domestic use must meet the Ready to Burn requirements, including a moisture content of no more than 20%. UK Government guidance on domestic solid fuels

2. The Outside of the Log Feels Dry – But Is the Middle Dry?
This catches people out.
The outside of a log can feel perfectly dry while the moisture level further inside the wood is different.
If you're checking firewood with a moisture meter, simply pressing the probes against the outside surface doesn't necessarily give you the reading you actually need.
The better method is to:
Take a representative log → split it → immediately test the freshly exposed inner face.

This matters because you're trying to establish how dry the wood itself is, not merely its surface.
3. Your Fire Isn't Established Before You Add Larger Logs
Sometimes the logs are perfectly good.
The fire simply wasn't ready for them.
A couple of tiny flames struggling through a handful of kindling may not have produced enough heat to establish larger pieces of firewood.
Your first job is to build a strong initial fire.
Dry kindling is important here.

Don't rush the process by burying a weak flame underneath several large logs.

Then add the larger fuel.
4. Your Fire Isn't Getting Enough Air
Fire needs oxygen.
If the airflow into your stove is restricted too early, your fire may struggle regardless of how dry the logs are.
This can result in logs that:
smoulder rather than flame
blacken without burning properly
or
keep going out
When lighting and refuelling your stove, use the air controls according to the stove manufacturer's instructions.
Different appliances operate differently, so generic internet advice about exactly how far to open or close a particular vent isn't particularly useful.
Your stove manual is the right place to start.
5. You're Putting Too Much Firewood on at Once
More wood doesn't automatically mean more fire.
If you've finally got a flame established and immediately pile the firebox full of logs, you can overwhelm it.
You're introducing a considerable amount of relatively cool material at once.
You may also interfere with the airflow the fire needs.
Build the fire progressively.
Once it's properly established, add fuel in accordance with the recommended loading instructions for your stove.
There's no prize for fitting the largest possible pile of logs behind the glass.
6. Your Logs May Be Too Large for the Stove
This is another reason log size matters.
A large stove may comfortably accommodate longer pieces of firewood.
A small stove won't.
If you're wedging oversized logs into the firebox, you may make it difficult to arrange the fire properly and maintain suitable airflow.
Check your stove manufacturer's recommended maximum log length.

7. Your Chimney or Flue May Not Be Drawing Properly
If you know the logs are properly dry and you're still having persistent problems, don't automatically keep blaming the wood.
Your stove depends on the chimney or flue producing the correct draught.
A poor draught can make a fire difficult to establish and keep burning.
There are numerous possible reasons for chimney and flue problems, and this isn't something to diagnose by repeatedly experimenting with a lit stove.
If you suspect there's an issue with the appliance, chimney or flue, stop using it and get it checked by an appropriately qualified professional.
This is particularly important if you're experiencing smoke entering the room.
8. Your Firewood Was Dry – But Has Been Stored Badly
Here's a frustrating one.
You can buy properly kiln dried firewood and then ruin the advantage by storing it badly.
Kiln drying doesn't make wood waterproof.
If logs are left exposed to persistent rain or stored somewhere damp with poor ventilation, they can take on moisture.
Kiln dried firewood should be stored somewhere:
Dry
Covered
Well ventilated
and preferably raised away from persistently damp ground.
A proper outdoor log store is perfectly suitable.
What you don't want is a pile of expensive kiln dried logs sitting uncovered in British rain for months.
What Are the Signs That Firewood May Be Too Wet?
No single visual clue gives you a definitive moisture reading, but persistently wet firewood may be associated with problems such as:
- Difficulty getting the logs to catch
- Logs repeatedly going out
- Excessive sizzling
- Poor flame development
- Persistent smouldering
- More smoke than expected
Don't rely on appearance alone, though.
If moisture is genuinely in doubt, test the wood properly with a suitable moisture meter on a freshly split surface.
Why Does Dry Firewood Matter So Much?
You're lighting a fire because you want heat.
If the wood contains excessive water, some of the available energy has to be used to heat and evaporate that moisture instead.
Properly dried firewood is therefore fundamental to getting good performance from wood fuel.
That's why below 20% moisture content isn't just a number we put on the product page.
It's an important characteristic of the fuel.
Does Kiln Dried Firewood Burn Better Than Wet Wood?
Properly dried firewood should light and burn more effectively than wet wood under suitable conditions.
But don't fall for the idea that kiln dried logs magically solve every stove problem.
You still need:
The correct fuel
The correct log size
A properly functioning stove and flue
Adequate airflow
Correct operation
Good storage
Firewood is part of the system.
If one of the other parts is wrong, buying better logs won't repair your chimney.
Why Does My Firewood Turn Black but Not Burn?
A log turning black without establishing a good flame can indicate incomplete combustion or insufficient heat/air around the fuel.
Possible causes include wet firewood, adding a large log before the fire is established or insufficient airflow.
If it keeps happening despite using properly dry firewood and operating the appliance according to its instructions, the stove and chimney may need attention.
Why Does My Firewood Sizzle?
A pronounced sizzling sound can be a warning sign that the wood contains significant moisture.
Water inside the wood is being heated as the log sits in the fire.
Again, don't diagnose moisture content purely by sound.
If you're suspicious, split a representative log and test the freshly exposed centre with a moisture meter.
Why Does My Fire Keep Going Out Overnight?
This one deserves a distinction.
If by “overnight” you mean you're deliberately trying to keep a wood-burning stove smouldering slowly for many hours by restricting the air, don't assume that's how your appliance should be operated.
Use the stove according to its manufacturer's instructions.
Trying to make logs last as long as possible by starving the fire of oxygen isn't the same thing as efficient burning.
Does Hardwood Solve the Problem?
Not automatically.
There's a persistent assumption that simply buying hardwood fixes every fire.
It doesn't.
Moisture content matters enormously.
Properly dried firewood and wet firewood behave very differently regardless of the label somebody puts on the species.
Log dimensions, stove operation and airflow matter too.
Don't ignore measurable fuel quality because somebody has convinced you that one word – “hardwood” – guarantees a perfect fire.
